Exhibition & Shortlist
420 Ideas for a New Sculpture: Jury and Visitors Nominate 16 Designs in the Competition "Make Art! Your Sculpture for Berlin."
420 artists from Germany, Switzerland, Poland, China, Spain, Great Britain, Denmark, and Croatia followed the call to "Make Art! Your Sculpture for Berlin" and submitted models for a sculpture for Deutsche Bank's new building in Berlin. "We are overwhelmed by the broad range, the openness and imaginativeness of the designs," stated a thrilled Friedhelm Hütte, Deutsche Bank's Global Head of Art. These were also the criteria on which the jury based its decision. "It was important for us to offer a platform for young and as yet unestablished artists alongside successful artists," Hütte added.
A jury comprising the artist Katharina Grosse, the curator Christoph Tannert and one representative each of Deutsche Bank and Art-InvestReal Estate nominated 15 designs to the shortlist, which was completed by the exhibition audience's favorite (Svenja Hehner). "The nominated designs are exemplary for the diversity of the submissions," is how the jury justified their selection: large-format, space-filling works for the plaza in front of Otto-Suhr Allee; subtle designs that, instead, almost disappear in the ground or rise into the air; or concepts calling on the local residents to participate. The motifs range from stacked conference tables, to a dance round the Golden Calf, to "Cloud No. 7." Around half of the nominated artists have already displayed their works in public, for the other half, the competition is their first presentation in a larger context.
All submitted designs were presented in a 24-hour show from November 7 to 8 in the atrium of Deutsche Bank and viewed by around 1,500 visitors.
After a further selection procedure dedicated to assessing the technical viability of the nominated designs, among other things, the jury in January will award the prize-winning design to be built and installed in front of Deutsche Bank's new building in Berlin on Otto-Suhr-Allee in fall of 2016.
